SERENADE premieres with Buffalo Philharmonic

Inspiration comes from many places, and after intermission the BPO treated us to Buffalo-born composer Paul Moravec’s“Serenade,” which we read was inspired by the 1899 Romanesque Revival New York Capitol building in Albany, with a 444-step staircase and numerous sculptures.  Like Daugherty’s “Niagara Falls for orchestra,” Moravec’s “Serenade” is another concerto for orchestra, as he invented new colors and instrument combinations.  Just when you think you’ve heard everything, there’s something new.  You could tell that the musicians on stage liked it, too.  And when JoAnn Falletta invited Paul Moravec on stage, they were applauding along with the audience.
