BIOGRAPHY

The music of composer Paul Moravec, recipient of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Music for Tempest Fantasy, has been described as “openly and ebulliently attractive, flowing with an effortless lyric pulse” (Fanfare), “assur-ed, virtuosic” (Wall Street Journal), and “resourceful  butidiomatic...richly melodic (Commentary Magazine). As the composer of orchestral, chamber, choral, and lyric compositions, as well as several film scores an electro-acoustic pieces, Moravec has been soughtout by leading performing artists and ensembles.  Recent world premieres including The Time Gallery with eighth blackbird at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Montserrat: Cello Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola (NYC); Cool  Fire and Chamber Symphony for the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival; Capital Unknowns for the Albany Symphony Everyone Sang for Troy Cook and the Marilyn Horne Foundation; Salute for soprano Amy Burton and Steven Blier of the New York Festival of Song, Vita Brevis a song cycle for tenor Paul Sperry; Spirit a cantata commissioned for the 75th anniversary of the flight of the Spirit of St. Louis; No Words, commissioned by Concert Artist Guild for pianist James Lent and the Gay Gotham Chorus; and two works for the Elements String Quartet.

Compositions which have appeared on compact disc include Songs of Love and War with The Dessoff Choir & Orchestra; Sonata for Violin and Piano for the Bachmann/Klibonoff Duo on BMG/RCA Classics Spiritdance, an orchestral work on the Vienna Modern masters label;an album of chamber composition stilted Circular Dreams on CRI; and Vita Brevis on Albany Records with the composer at the piano. Coming soon: The Time Gallery, with other works and Tempest Fantasyon Arabesque Recordings.  Awards and fellowships include the Rome Prize fromthe American Academy in Rome, an NEA ComposerFellowship,  a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship, and the Charles Ives  and Goddard Lieberson.
